STUDIO POLICY
Attendance
My time and money is committed to your arranged lesson time, regardless of whether you attend. I expect that you will make every effort to attend class. Excused absences include a serious illness or personal emergency, all other reasons will be unexcused. During the school months students with three absentees, unrelated to illness, school conflicts or family emergencies will be asked to review their commitment to continuing lessons, and may loose their lesson time to someone more committed. Timeliness is essential, call or text me if you will be late.
Cancellations require 24 hours notice by telephone. Cancellations without 24 hours notice will be considered forfeited and tuition is due in full. Make-up lessons are on my availability. If I must cancel a class, a refund will be given.
Parents of young children are welcome and encouraged to stay in the studio during your child’s lesson. If you choose to drop off your child, you are expected to pick them up promptly after the lesson.
Student Responsibilities
Preparation for lessons, include: arriving promptly, with music, an audio tape and tuition in hand. Recording lessons is encouraged. As your skills develop you will be expected to arrive with notes and rhythms learned. Students are expected to practice at least 30 minutes, five days a week. Even a little practice every day will be more effective and one or two marathon sessions. Parents, set a practice schedule for your children and give then an area where they will not be distracted with outside stimulus. When preparing for a performance bringing an accompanist to lessons or working with an accompanist outside of lessons, may be required to get the song(s) performance ready. I can give you accompanist references.
Music
I will assign music designed to build particular technical and/or artistic goals, however I encourage students to also bring in music that inspires them or that they preparing for a school audition, church solo, etc. It is the student’s responsibility to acquire the required texts. Resources for music include, but are not limited to, Portland Music Company, Multnomah Public Library, Musik Centur, and amazon.com. I can purchase books for you, but I require cash up front and will return the change to you. There will be a nominal $5 service fee, this fee will go toward building the studio library.
Teaching Philosophy
My studio is an open and affirming place to explore and develop each students artistic potential. Great performances occur during those magical moments when the performer's emotional, psychological, physical, intellectual, and spiritual aspects come together and lead the audience in an empathic experience.
To that end we will work together to achieve excellence in singing through a dynamic process, where we will explore the various aspects of singing and performance. Students will develop technical skills, musicianship, stage presence and body awareness (body mapping, visit www.bodymap.org for more information). Regardless of whether one wants to be an opera star or sing in a church choir, voice lessons can help students develop confidence and a stronger, freer instrument.
My expectations from my students is that they be inquisitive and that they ask questions as I guide them through the learning process. I expect students to give 100% percent to their. Students can expect that I will, in return, give 100% in helping them develop their talents, try to inspire them to higher levels of artistry and to develop a teaching strategy that will best fit each individual.
Additional Performance Opportunities
